The Adinkra Symbols Collection
The Adinkra symbols come from West Africa and were originally created by the people of Gyaman and Akan of Ghana and Ivory Coast. The adinkra symbols represent popular proverbs, maxims, concepts or aphorisms. These symbols are endless and are still used today. They are simplified or stylized depictions of natural shapes, objects, plants, animals, hairstyles and buildings. It is known that there are around 400 symbols in Ghana. The word ‘Adinkra’ means ‘farewell’ or ‘goodbye’ in the Twi language. The Adinkra symbols are used extremely in fabrics, logos, walls, furniture, t-shirts, hats, jewellery and pottery.
